You insert them narrow end first and tap them in to just below the machined surface on the block. They deform against the stronger cast iron to create an oil tight seal. Definitely a one use item, but they are dirt cheap

A small .030 hole sprays oil directly on the distributor gear at all times. If they are tapped, simply unscrew 2 of them and replace them in the correct location.
