Well it's been my experience to use the saddle soap to clean them, in my case road salt, concrete dust etc, to get them nice and clean and remove anything that cold dry out or damage the leather. Once cleaned, I would use mink oil to condition, waterproof and protect it from drying out. These are the broad strokes I believe.
